Map Skills and Leading TACH Runs
08 June 2019
Map Skills and Leading TACH Runs
The aim of the day is to give new members, or those who haven't led many runs, the confidence to devise a route, select a pub and to safely lead a group of people on a Tuesday or Thursday run. This course does not include more advanced navigation techniques, such as distance (pacing and timing), contours, relocation and compass work (bearings and resection).
Entries are limited to a maximum of 8 participants.
TACH is subsiding the course, so the cost to members will be £10, including tea and coffee. Vegan lunch (Chilli, Mexican or similar) optional for an extra £3 (pay on the day).
Map Skills (10:00 to 15:00, with break for lunch)
Becky Webb, whom some of you may know from FAC-OFF, is a qualified Mountain Leader, and she'll be teaching her Level 1 Map Skills Course:
"A course for people who have little/no map reading history or those who want to brush up on their skills. The course will cover: map scales, features, grid references, orientating the map using features and a compass and taking a bearing. The aim of the course is to make you feel more comfortable interpreting the map and surroundings so that you feel confident enough to get out and explore new territory".
Becky's course consist of a 'classroom session', followed by a practical session exploring the paths and fields of Stanton Drew. You'll need to bring appropriate clothing for country walking in June.
Leading TACH Runs (15:15 to 16:15)
An experienced TACH run leader will host an hour-long coaching session on the basics of leading, including venue selection, meeting and greeting, leading the group, dealing with emergencies, back-marking, sheepdogging and so on.
