Tusker Rock Bristol Channel Swim Camp!
30 May 2024
Looking to step up your swimming distances? Thinking of swimming the Bristol Channel (or any other channel)? Join us in June 2024 for a long weekend of Bristol Channel Swim training and swim talks on our residential Tusker Rock Swim camp! The camp will be held in a stunning location just outside of Porthcawl. You will be staying at a self contained bunkhouse on the edge of Methyr Mawr Sand dunes that looks out over Porthcawl, the Bristol Channel and Glenthorne house in England in the distance beyond (if you are looking at the Original Triple Crown – that’s your target!).
It’s a beautiful, tranquil spot, perfect for relaxing and throwing yourself fully into your channel swim training with a small group of like minded people! Beautiful Newton Bay, the Bristol Channel and England in the far distance, as viewed from the door of the bunkhouse! Each day you will be provided with a breakfast buffet before moving on to swim at various swim spots, synonymous with Bristol Channel swimming. There will be swims at Penarth, Porthcawl and Swansea so whichever BC swim you are booked for, this camp will give you a unique insight and a big boost to your training.
There is the opportunity for up to 20 hours of swimming spread over four nights and five days with the aim to take in as many locations as we can to give you the best insight into Bristol Channel Swimming. Price for the camp is £450pp and includes accommodation (bunkhouse style with 5 shared bedrooms; swimmers need to bring their own sleeping bags and pillows or bedding), buffet breakfast and evening meals included. The House is all on one level, and has disabled shower and toilet facilities and all reasonable adjustments will be made to make the swims accessible for all swimmers. Booked for evening talks are Victoria Jones, Sports Nutritionist and Mike James, The Endurance Physio. It almost goes without saying but fuelling your marathon swims and staying in prime condition to complete the swim are absolute keys to a successful swim! Both speakers were EXTREMELY helpful to me before my English Channel swim in 2019 so it’ll be a great opportunity to pick up some tips and get any questions you have answered by the professionals!
All swims are weather dependent but we will always look to swap swims out to other locations if conditions are against us. Water temperature is expected to be around 14 to 15 degrees but is obviously down to the weather. Swimmers should come to the camp prepared and trained ready for multiple several hour swims in the sea.
Tusker swim camp is organized by Tom Chapman, Tom is a triathlon and open water coach (on the CSA’s approved coaches list) and WOWSA (world open water swimming association) coach and Lifeguard! Tom lives on the Bristol Channel, coaches on the Bristol Channel and over the last few years he has also helped organize a large number of BC swims for others, observed BC swims for the MSF and the was the driving force behind the formation of the Bristol Channel Swimming Association in 2021 (of which he is still the chairman!). He also has an English Channel Solo, six different ratified Bristol Channel solos across four different routes (which is a Guiness World Record!) as well as multiple ironman and channel relay finishes across the English and North Channels and the length of lake Geneva!
The House is bunkhouse style accommodation,
