West Exe Family Cycle Challenge
17 June 2017
This is your chance to get fit, have a lot of fun and support a fantastic charity.
The Rotary Club of Dawlish Water are holding for the first time the West Exe Family Cycle Challenge - with the main beneficiary being Prostate Cancer UK (see more about this charity below).
The event – to suit all ages and levels of fitness - takes place on Saturday, June 17 2017 and you can choose between two routes:
- St. Mary’s Hall, Dawlish Warren, EX7 0NA to Exeter Quay and back
- or choose to ride and return from various shorter stages.
- Exeter Quay (Piazza Terracina near Bar Venezia) to St. Mary’s Hall, Dawlish Warren, and back
- or choose to ride and return from various shorter stages.
You can start the event anytime between 10am and 12pm with a final finish time of 4pm. All competitors will receive an achievement award to mark their involvement.
To enter the Challenge in advance you must register and pay through this Fullonsport website. Gift aid is also available (which will help boost the proceeds for charity). Entry fees are: £10 per adult, £5.00 for children under 18 and £25 for a family group, comprising one or two adults and two or more children.
AGE RESTRICTIONS:
- You must be aged 18 years or over to complete the online registration.
- All participants under 18 years must be registered by an appropriate adult who can provide consent.
- There is no minimum age for participation, but young people under the age of 14 years must be accompanied at all times during the event by an adult over the age of 18 years.
The event is not a race. It is a “challenge” to participants to cycle as far as they decide along National Cycle Routes 2 and 34. Checkpoints will be four miles from each of the start points - near Powderham Church and the Topsham foot ferry respectively (and, themselves, about three miles apart). Thus, cyclists could complete 4, 7 11, (straight line) or 8, 14 or 22 miles (circular).
The route will be manned at intervals by marshals under the control of Dawlish Water Rotary Club. Along the route here will be some markers for children to test their knowledge of the environment.
Monies raised will go the Rotary Club of Dawlish Water Charitable Trust with the main beneficiary being Prostate Cancer UK.
WATER AND FOOD
Participants will be required to bring their own water and food for their journey. There are a number of public houses, cafes, restaurants and shops along the route - principally The Mount Pleasant Inn at Dawlish Warren, Anchor Inn at Cockwood, Turf Lock pub and Double Locks pub, and at the quay itself, Bar Venezia and Lutzys.
TOILET FACILITIES
Toilet facilities can be found along the route. These include facilities at Exeter Quay, Starcross and Dawlish Warren and regularly-spaced pubs and cafes.
……………………………………………………………………………………………………….
ALL CYCLISTS MUST WEAR A SUITABLE HELMET AND DISPLAY THEIR ISSUED ROTARY BADGE ON THE FRONT OF THEIR CYCLE HELMET AT ALL TIMES.
